Becoming a Mentor
The UVic Women in Science Peer Mentorship Program (PMP) provides an exciting chance for both undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of Science and Engineering at UVic to connect with seasoned peer mentors. These mentors can be advanced undergraduates, graduate students, or even medical school students, offering valuable guidance and support on your academic and career journey.
Welcome to the UVic Women in Science Peer Mentorship Program (PMP), your gateway to a world of opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students in Science and Engineering at UVic! Get ready to embark on an exciting journey where you'll be matched with experienced peer mentors, including upper-level undergraduates, graduate students, and even medical school students.
So, what's this Peer Mentoring Program all about?
It's your chance to connect with fellow STEM enthusiasts, share experiences, and build a supportive mentor-mentee relationship. Whether you're navigating your way through academic challenges or seeking insights into your future in STEM, your mentor is here to guide you comfortably through your UVic years.
Why should you consider becoming a Peer Mentor?
Well, it's an incredible opportunity to flex your leadership muscles and empower the next generation of scientists and engineers. You'll forge connections with peers and pass on the invaluable lessons you've learned, helping your mentee chart their own academic and career path. Plus, being part of this mentorship program and advocating for female representation in STEM fields will shine brilliantly on your resumé!
Who can be a mentor, you ask?
Any upper-level undergraduate (year 3+) or graduate student in a STEM program at UVic can step into this role. And guess what? Starting this year, UBC Island Medical Program students are invited to apply too. We believe in inclusivity, regardless of gender identity.
Now, let's talk commitments.
As a mentor, you'll attend the Mentor Training Session and engage in regular Mentor Meetings and PMP Events. But the heart of it all is building a strong connection with your mentee through monthly check-ins and providing timely answers to their questions. We'll ask for your thoughts through short, periodic surveys, so your feedback is essential.
We're all about making meaningful mentor-mentee matches. Whether it's aligning by Major/Program, sharing similar interests or experiences (like Co-op, Honours, Varsity Athletics, or semesters abroad), or finding common hobbies, we're committed to pairing you up effectively. Our goal is to break free from the competitive norm and foster empowering mentor-mentee relationships that benefit everyone involved.
So, gear up to be a part of this inspiring journey with us at the UVic Women in Science Peer Mentorship Program. Let's build a supportive STEM community where empowerment and collaboration shine bright!
