Joanna Robinson-Leith
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Joanna and I’m a fourth year Physics and Astronomy student at UVic. I originally started my undergrad at UBC in Engineering, but after a few years there, I decided to move to Victoria and transferred to UVic. While the move here was difficult, I am incredibly thankful I had such a strong group of friends and family to support me. Outside of school, I love cooking and baking, going on hikes, and skiing with my friends! I have also recently re-discovered my love for reading, so when I have the time, I will be reading all I can.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
A fun fact about myself is I have driven from coast to coast of North America twice! The first time I drove through the States with my best friend as I was moving out for university! The second time it was just me and my two dogs driving along the trans-canada highway in the peak of the winter.
How did you first get involved with UVic Women in Science?
I first heard of WIS from one of my friends and shortly after, I looked on their website to see where I could get involved! I’m so happy I have landed in a role (Director of Human Resources) where I can help build the club and also be part of such a welcoming and inspiring community.
What are your future career goals?
I don’t have a clear picture of my career goals yet, but I’m focusing on learning and gaining experience to discover what feels right. I love what I’m studying right now in my classes and I’m open to different opportunities should they come up!
Is there any field of research you are particularly interested in?
As a combined major in physics and astronomy, I am exposed to several different topics in science. Currently, my primary interest lies in astronomy, where I am particularly drawn to research in cosmology and stellar evolution.
How did you discover your interest in science?
I consider myself lucky to have older siblings that have such a strong interest in science, and from them, I have developed my love for science. They have taught me so much about problem-solving, and the excitement of discovery, which inspired my curiosity and passion.
What is your favourite non-stem hobby/activity?
I have always loved painting and drawing, but recently, I have developed a love for colouring! It's something new that I don’t have a lot of experience in, but the process is so calming and peaceful. I would love to get more art supplies and further expand my collection!
What advice do you have for people looking to get into your field?
My advice to anyone looking to get into physics or astronomy is to work hard and have fun with it! While school is important, I believe it's more important to enjoy what you're studying.
What is your favorite way to relieve stress and recharge after a long day?
After a long day, my favourite thing to do is decompress with a comfort movie or show. I find it helps me take my mind off of any stress I have and I love the familiarity of my favourite movies and shows!
What media have you been consuming recently? Music, films, books etc…
I have been listening to a lot of music lately, especially walking to and from campus and while studying. My current favourite is Clairo’s album Charm! I have been listening to it on repeat since it came out earlier in the summer.
Who is someone that inspires you and why?
My brother is my biggest inspiration. With his background in physics, he has always been my go-to person for school-related questions and academic guidance. He has taught me the importance of resilience and perseverance, while also reminding me to approach life with a sense of humour and not take things too seriously.
What do you find most challenging about your degree?
Apart from the difficulty in the topics I'm studying currently, I find it difficult to manage my time with my course load. Most of my classes every semester have an additional lab component, some with a tutorial as well. And on top of that, I also work part-time. I’m always struggling with balancing all the things on my to-do list, but I know I am getting better at managing my time more efficiently and effectively.
What do you feel you have gained by being a part of UVic Women in Science?
I have only recently joined WIS, and I already feel like I have met so many wonderful people. I feel I have gained meaningful connections within an empowering and inspiring community!
